Antarctica InSync at UNOC3: Advancing Polar Science for Global Impact

Antarctica InSync actively participated in the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, showcasing the importance of polar science in addressing global environmental challenges.

On June 11, Alexander Haumann presented the scientific pillars and motivation behind this large-scale initiative during the session “Frontlines of Cryospheric Science – Challenges, Campaigns and Collective Actions” at the Cryosphere Pavilion. His presentation emphasized the urgent need for coordinated polar research to understand and respond to the accelerating changes in the cryosphere.

The momentum continued on June 12 with a joint session of Antarctica InSync, POLARIN, and TARA Polaris Drift held aboard the German research vessel RV METEOR. The event focused on the critical role of the polar regions in the global climate and ocean system. All three projects demonstrated how polar science fosters international collaboration and provides vital insights into the interconnected challenges of climate change, ocean health, and biodiversity loss.

The session was well attended and sparked lively discussion among participants from around the world. Sincere thanks went to the crew of the RV METEOR and the team from PTJ (Projektträger Jülich) for their invaluable support in making this event possible.

It was an inspiring afternoon that demonstrated the power of science to connect people and shape the future of our planet.
