The 2025 UN Ocean Conference will be focused on “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”. It will seek to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), with three main priorities, to produce an ambitious Nice Ocean Action Plan:
- Priority 1: Working towards completion of multilateral processes linked to the ocean
- Priority 2: Mobilizing finance resources for the SDG14 and supporting the development of a sustainable blue economy
- Priority 3: Strengthen and better disseminate knowledge linked to marine sciences to enhance policy-making
The Ocean Decade will be present and will play a key role in the Conference by hosting events and providing opportunities to put ocean science and knowledge at the heart of global ocean action.

On 12 June 2025, from 13:30 to 15:00, a special side event will take place aboard the German research vessel RV Meteor, docked at the Port of Nice, during the United Nations Ocean Conference. The event will be co-organised by Antarctica InSync, the Tara Ocean Foundation, and the European polar infrastructure network POLARIN, under the theme “Polar Oceans, Climate and Biodiversity: Advancing Synergies and Sustainability of International Science Collaboration.”
The event will bring together scientists, policymakers, and civil society representatives to explore the critical role of the polar oceans in regulating Earth’s climate and preserving global biodiversity. The Arctic and Southern Oceans serve as major heat and carbon sinks, drive oceanic and atmospheric circulation, and host some of the planet’s most unique and productive ecosystems. However, their increasing vulnerability due to rapid warming and ice loss underscores the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation.
Three major international initiatives will be introduced:
- Antarctica InSync, a UN Ocean Decade programme supporting coordinated Antarctic research
- POLARIN, a European research infrastructure network advancing polar science
- Tara Arctic Drift, a planned transpolar research expedition led by the Tara Ocean Foundation
A moderated panel discussion will follow, focusing on:
- Opportunities for involvement in these initiatives
- Key scientific questions to advance understanding of polar climate and ecosystems
- Strategies for sustained and inclusive polar observation
- Contributions to ocean governance and policy development
- Knowledge exchange with business, policy, and civil society
- Support for early-career scientists through funding and mentorship
This side event will underscore the value of collective action and data-sharing in advancing polar science and emphasize the polar oceans’ irreplaceable role in maintaining a stable and livable planet.

Event Details
The next Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM) will be held in Milan, Italy, from 23 June to 3 July 2025.
The ATCM is attended by representatives from all Signatory States to the Antarctic Treaty, observers and invited experts. It takes place annually “for the purpose of exchanging information, consulting together on matters of common interest pertaining to Antarctica, and formulating and considering and recommending to their Governments measures in furtherance of the principles and objectives of the Treaty” (Art. IX). The meetings are hosted each year by decision-making states, the so-called “Consultative Parties”, which amount to 29 of the 58 Signatory States. Members are granted Consultative status by a Decision of the ATCM, based on consensus of the decision-making States.
The ATCM has a permanent Secretariat based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the task of supporting the annual Consultative Meeting and facilitating the achievement of the objectives of the Treaty. The ATCM is structured into a Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP) and three working groups, respectively dedicated to: 1) legal and institutional issues; 2) scientific cooperation; 3) Antarctic tourism.
Both the CEP and the three working groups mentioned above submit the different issues to be approved to the attention of the ATCM Plenary. In this regard, a fundamental role is played by the consensus rule, which is required for approval.
The ATCM operates using three different types of acts: Measures, which contain provisions that are intended to be legally binding once approved by all Consultative Parties to the Treaty according to their respective internal principles; Decisions, which become effective upon adoption or at times otherwise specified; and Resolutions, which are exhortatory in nature.
ATCM meetings will be held in 2025 at Fiera Milano Congressi (MI.CO.), one of the most prestigious congress centres in Italy and Europe, offering ample space and a variety of operational solutions for holding congress events.
