Satellite Earth Observation (EO) plays a vital role in monitoring and understanding Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, including land ice, sea ice, ocean, atmosphere, ecosystems, climate and human activities. The Earth Observation Cross-Cutting group for Antarctica InSync brings together an international group of EO experts from all Antarctica InSync Science Themes to identify and address common aspects ensuring that a synchronized approach is taken across all activities.
The priorities for the Earth Observation Cross-Cutting group are:
- improve satellite Earth Observation capabilities over Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by extending the temporal record,
- improving spatial and temporal resolution, and observing new variables.
- maximize the opportunities for coordinated calibration and validation activities with fieldwork campaigns.
- identify and address scientific research priorities that can be studied with EO.
- increase the interoperability and consolidation of satellite datasets across traditional science domains.
- coordinate between space agencies and maximize the opportunity to utilize high-resolution data from commercial providers.
- ensure EO data is used to its full extent by modelling studies. – build a legacy for Antarctica InSync by extending the temporal coverage outside of the fieldwork phase.
